So I have received quite a few questions and this post is to clarify things.
1. You only need Veency on the iPhone if you’re interested in the Experimental – control the iPhone from the browser. If you only care about TV out or passive viewing of your iPhone screen within Safari, then you can safely remove Veency from your iPhone after you’ve installed ScreenSplitr and it will still work.
2. Some people are asking me if this could work with a usb cable. I think they misread what ScreenSplitr does so the short answer is no. You don’t plug your iPhone to your computer, you connect it to your TV or your WiFi network people!
3. Some people are experiencing problems connecting to the iPhone within Safari. ScreenSplitr is listening on port 8099 for incoming requests (not modifiable right now) so make sure that your PC/Mac doesn’t block that outgoing port. I will make this configurable later. In the meantime, if you can telnet to this port then ScreenSplitr will work (192.168.1.101 is my iPhone local Wifi IP):
Sylvains-Computer:~ sylvain$ telnet 192.168.1.101 8099
Trying 192.168.1.101...
Connected to 192.168.1.101.
Escape character is '^]'.
In general, if you don’t see a pop-up on the iPhone asking if it’s ok to accept an incoming connection, then you have a network problem.
4. Safari is the only browser that I know of with Bonjour built-in. I know that there’s a Bonjour Browser standalone App for OSX out there. If someone knows of a IE or FF add-on, let me know.
5. Experimental mode connects to Veency on port 5900 so make sure that it’s reachable from the PC/Mac. Additionally, a connection on port 8989 is needed for Flash to be granted rights to connect to the iPhone. A telnet to port 5900 should give you this:
Sylvains-Computer:~ sylvain$ telnet 192.168.1.101 5900
Trying 192.168.1.101...
Connected to 192.168.1.101.
Escape character is '^]'.
RFB 003.008
6. Some people are experiencing some weird layout issues on the TV. Play with the NTSC vs PAL mode in the iPod Settings of your iPhone and let me know if that fixes it.
7. Response time will vary depending on your WIFI network speed. Make sure that your PC and iPhone are not far from your Wireless Router/Access Point.

ScreenSplitr is a very cool app.
Please consider to create an option menu for selecting PAL vs NTSC output.
Best Regards
Thank you

So you’re saying, you have a PAL TV and you have to force NTSC on the ipod for it to work?*** …
@Sylvain:
thanks first again for your app and your question now.
yes, i have a PAL TV and i realy have to force the Iphone/ipod to NTSC. if i don’t do it so the picture is cutted of. by the way, it is the same problem with this other TVout app from cydia. but there are also some other issues i had, which lookslike you didn’t have in your preview video some days ago ( maybe also because of PAL???). for example: turning picture on the screen, when turning the iphone didn’t work. dissapearing of the keyboard etc. .
hope this helps.
cheers and rock on!

i didnt understand which cable to use and how to find it
#4 written by Erik January 22nd, 2009 at 10:28
Does this export audio too? What good is a big screen tv with audio coming out of my tiny iPhone speaker?
#5 written by Sylvain January 22nd, 2009 at 12:33
Yes, just buy the right cable with audio out.
#6 written by Sylvain January 22nd, 2009 at 12:33
Go to Apple store and ask for iPod AV cable.

Screensplitter keeps going to the off position in the middle of watching anything – youtube or Orb – get a “no signal” on my flatscreen and need to re-tap the Screensplitter icon to turn it back on…basically the app keeps shutting off…any help? Thanks!

Screensplitr works very well with the most applications which are installed on my iphone (i.e. maps or notes). But there ist one (the reason I installed scrennsplitr) which would’t not show the springboard on the iphone, it is black. It is an app called oracle business indicators. After starting the application the springboard disappers, hard to tap at the rigth place on the screen. Please have a look why it is not working. The app is free in the app store. You dont need an server application to test, starting the app shows the login screen.
Because I need the app for live presentations it would help very much if you could solve this problem. Second problem is landscape format, ladscape is show as portrait.
Anyway, thanks for the application and bests regards

Hi,
thanks for your work, it’s a great app.
In one of your videos, you are talking about using Screensplitr and VLC..can you explain that?
La vidéo avec votre fille utilisant l’iPhone est géniale ;)

Hello,
nice work!
I do not have a mac so I opened the URL (http://192.168.0.124:8099/screensplitr) manually through firefox.
In the FAQ you say something about “5. Experimental mode connects to Veency on port 5900…”.
How do I make the app use “Experimental mode”? Or what exactly does “Experimental mode”?
Thanks a lot!
#12 written by emoser January 25th, 2009 at 11:02
@Says
thx for your tip with the url. I can’t install Bonjour on my Business-PC (no Install-Rights), but Firefox I can. It works great with firefox (except the experimental funcition). I also tried it with IE, no chance.

I’m unable to get my phone to appear in bonjour. i have my firewall turned off. can anyone think of any reasons for this?
#14 written by Sylvain January 25th, 2009 at 22:49
emoser: this is normal. IE doesn’t understand the video format. Only Safari & Firefox do. You can also open the url “http://.local.:8099/screensplitr” into VLC where is the name of your iphone.
#15 written by Sylvain January 25th, 2009 at 22:51
user: Instead of opening that URL, use “http://:8099/content/home.html” where is the IP of your iPhone. Then click on the Experimental link at the bottom. Note that you need to install Veency manually now on the iPhone for this to work. In the latest package, I removed the dependency as it is not needed for the other modes.
#16 written by Sylvain January 25th, 2009 at 22:52
Nicolas: VLC can stream the video feed as well. Just enter the url you got from Safari into VLC (“http://.local.:8099/screensplitr where is the name of your iPhone).
#17 written by Sylvain January 25th, 2009 at 22:54
John: Sounds like your iPhone is running out of Memory. Just reboot it and try again right after fresh reboot.
#18 written by Sylvain January 25th, 2009 at 23:00
emoser: I just installed Oracle Business Indicators like you asked. I have no problem seeing the springboard after launching the app. I don’t know what you’re talking about regarding landscape vs portrait. On the TV, when connected with a cable, you can flip the iPhone and ScreenSplitr will show the screen in landscape mode on the TV. If you’re using Bonjour and Safari, without cable, then yes it doesn’t support landscape at this point. Too CPU intensive for the iPhone.
#19 written by emoser January 26th, 2009 at 11:53
Sylvain: Thanks, I had installed also TvOut and I think this was the problem. After removing TvOut screensplitr works as you mentioned, it works perfect with the cable (no missing springboard and landscape).
On the PC I use Tigthvnc-viewer, then I can use remote steering the iphone.
Thanks for your application!

Thanks for the reply! Any idea on increasing the frame speed in order to transfer my orb video more smoothly?

Great program. Some bugs, but very good.
I have been trying to help others on ModMyI forums to get this running. Here is my post, which you may find helpful to others: http://www.modmyi.com/forums/native-iphone-ipod-touch-app-launches/474761-new-app-screensplitr-cydia-view-your-screen-both-iphone-tv-pc-2.html#post3235041
Here is a Summary:
“Sometimes missing a step make all the difference. makes sure that you follow these steps exactly (as when the first time you did a jailbreak):
IF YOU HAVE BOTH ScreenSplitr and TVOut installed DO THIS FIRST:
I read this post from the developer, it says to Uninstall TVOut (Plutinosoft » Blog Archive » ScreenSplitr FAQ), but then I noticed a significant problem with video quality. (uninstalling TVOut removed a dependency file for video rendering) Follow these steps to fix that issue.
- Uninstall TVOut (Leave ScreenSplitr installed)
- Quit Cycdia and Respring
- Re-Install TVout
(Reboot or Respring to start off fresh helps)
Getting ScreenSplitr to work:
0. MAKE SURE SCREENSPLITR IS OFF
1. Connect AV cable to video display unit
2. Connect iPhone to AV cable (if you are using USB or the message pops up hit “NO”)
3. Then start ScreenSplitr
4. You should then get the display.
If this does not work or you lose your display, Quit ScreenSplitr and restart the steps from step 0.
This is what I am using:
iPhone 3G firmware 2.2
Aftermarket cable (Bought at Best Buy)with USB and Composite RCA on the other end (Rocketfish™ – Composite A/V Cable for Apple® iPod® http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage….=1218009789158)
JVC KW NX7000 DVD Navigation radio set to AV Input
I actually made a video using Cycorder to record live images of ScreenSplitr working on my JVC headunit.”

I did what as you instructed got my video quality back but, the problem is that i have all the preferences on tvout turned off, and when i start orb, it turns on tvout and disables screen splitter.
#25 written by Nadeem February 24th, 2009 at 11:36
Perfect app except that the frames are very slow and choppy and thats the only thing tvout app is good at as it gives perfect frame rates. Hope this is pdated/fixed in screensplitr
#26 written by drumthrasher109 February 24th, 2009 at 18:00
This is a nice little app, but it slows everything down (since it runs in the background).
Something like TVOut would be better.
#27 written by James February 24th, 2009 at 20:55
first of all, I want to thank you. This is a great app!
it kinda works for me though, sometimes I don’t get any image and other times as quick as I press the app.
I tried changing between PAL and NTSC with no success.
What can I do?
this app is perfect with Air Sharing to display presentations

I was just wondering, is there a way to make this app work with non-Apple cables? I did a stupid thing and bought a cable off eBay that was supposed to do video out with the 3G iPhone, but, of course, I get the “this is not compatible with the iPhone” message when I try to use it. It would be great if you could make it so this app skips checking for the authentication chip. Please email me if this is possible. Thanks!

I am using ScreenSplitr primarily to create screencasts. So, I’m using ScreenFlow or SnapzPro to capture what’s going on with Safari.
The video is the best I’ve been able to obtain so far but how do I get the audio so that my screen capture software records that as well and how do I make sure that it is synchronized?
#30 written by Frank Lowney March 6th, 2009 at 08:42
I’m trying to visualize my iPod touch on my desktop machine in order to do some screencasting. I’m in a university setting where the WiFi is a separate, highly restricted network. To get around this, I have a laptop with Internet Sharing turned on.
My iPod touch thus has an IP of 10.0.2.2 but using http://10.0.2.2:8900 isn’t getting a connection. I even tried using 168.16.213.216:8900 since that is the IP of the laptop at this moment (DHCP) but no go there either.
I have no problem with this at home using an Airport Extreme to which the iPod connects wirelessly and my desktop is connected via ethernet.
How can I get this to work at work as well as at home?
#31 written by Frank Lowney March 8th, 2009 at 12:01
I’m using Bonjour in Safari to do screencasting so would like to be able to be able to have a black background and offset the video by a few pixels so that I could more easily capture every bit of the 320X480 and a few pixels extra all around. That extra material should be black.
This will enable me to place the video behind an image of the iPhone so that the final version looks complete.

Another screencasting question concerns how best to represent finger gestures.
My ideal would be to draw from the iPhone routines that interpret finger gestures and represent them on the screen as circles that vary in transparency to indicate touch, tap and swipe. The iPhone Simulator from Apple uses this approach to a limited degree but it is quite effective in representing multi-touch gestures such as pinch. Apple just didn’t take the idea very far.
I suppose that this would be another application entirely though ScreenSplitr would certainly be enhanced by it.
Possible?
I suppose that I could use iPhone finger in post production but I’d like to avoid obscuring any of the screen. Even without an obscuring finger, any kind of post production is going to be tedious and error prone.

ScreenSplitr is such a great advance in what was possible before in the way of screencasting the iPhone UI in action. This is especially the case with the Videos.app. Before ScreenSplitr, all I could get was a black screen with the HUD overlay — no actual moving pictures.
Here’s a screencasting video I did today:
http://podcasting.gcsu.edu/4DCGI/Podcasting/GCSU/Episodes/15608/11305.mov
Of course I’d still like to see a higher frame rate but this is quite usable for most purposes.
#34 written by Mikey March 28th, 2009 at 19:55
I also bought non-apple cables from ebay and ScreenSplitr works for like a minute but then I get this prompt saying “This accessory is not made to work with iPhone. Would you like to turn on Airplane mode to help reduce audio interference? You will not be able to make or receive calls.”
After that the video stops working, or if I plug the cable back in I get a weird jumping video effect of the last screen it displayed.
Any ideas?

We are looking to introduce iPhone projector and use the TV-out.
Other then using the undocumented TV-out feature are there any other issues that will prevent this app from being a legal one in the App Store?
Are you using some sort of background process to be able to mirror the iPhone screen?
