DemoGod with iPhone remote control support

Tonight, I was able to get DemoGod to control the iPhone remotely. It will require a quick update to ScreenSplitr though. I have yet to finalize how I will let users decide the “viewer mode only” vs “remote control”. The remote control will be based on vnc. Most precisely, it will require installing the Veency package on Cydia. For the viewer part, I have 2 solutions between Flashlight-VNC and TightVNC Java Applet. Both work, TightVNC seems a bit faster. I am thinking I will provide an option for users to choose which one they prefer.

Here’s a quick video I made using Screenjelly. Obviously there are a few issues left to be resolved.

It seems that iPhoneOD 3.1.1 has subtly “broken” screensplitr and, by extension, DemoGod as well. I’m doing my testing under MacOS X 10.6.1 and iPhoneOS 3.1.1 on a 1G iPod touch (no jailbreak for the 2G or 3G iPod touch yet).

I say “subtly” because everything works as expected for a minute or two and then ScreenSplitr gets disconnected. Testing with DemoGod, I get a few screens of activity and then it returns to the Welcome screen w/o locating the iPod. The ScreenSplitr On badge is present. If I tap ScreenSplitr and restart DemoGod, I get a few more seconds.

Using Safari/Bonjour, I obtain the exact same result.

I don’t have an iPhone to test but would not be surprised to hear that this problem exists there too under 3.1.

I should add that I have another iPod touch with the 3.0 firmware and that works flawlessly. The problem is that I’m having to create screencasts that document features that are new in 3.1.1.

I believe I may have a fix for it. I have to submit the update to cydia. Their submission process has changed, it will take a few days.

I will check Cydia often. Thanks so much for the rapid response.

Thanks Sylvain, the problem I reported above has been fully resolved in the latest build of ScreenSplitr. Cydia should let you know that there is an update. I’m back in the screencasting biz again.
